Be Your Own Biggest Loser

Here’s how to be your own Biggest Loser and have your own finale!

This past week has been one of winners …. American Idol, Celebrity Apprentice and of course The Biggest Loser. In case you aren’t familiar, The Biggest Loser is a television show. Overweight contestants attempt to lose the most weight to fight for a cash prize. and contestants leave home to stay at a Biggest Loser ranch and work with celebrity trainers hoping to transform their bodies, their health and their lives. Each week contestant go through a series of challenges and there’s a weigh-in at the end of the week. The goal is to lose the highest percentage of weight (or most weight) to become the Biggest Loser.

The season of The Biggest Loser lasts 20 weeks. That got me thinking. What could you accomplish with your health and fitness in that same time frame?

Here’s a few things I know that will help you celebrate your own Biggest Loser Finale in just a mere 13 weeks. Of course you’ll be pushing forward once you’re done and can compare your results with the contestants. Now, before I recommend a plan, just know, your results can be measured in many many ways.

  • Belt Loop notches (inches lost)
  • Clothing Size
  • Photos taken every 30 days
  • Amount of Energy you’re gaining
  • Confidence
  • Physical ailments subsiding
  • Better sleep
  • People commenting on your progress
  • Strength and Endurance each week

OK, here’s my recommendation for becoming your own contestant and success story!

  1. Make the decision you want to commit to a fitness and nutrition program for 13 weeks. Identify why you want to accomplish this? What will you be able to do when you are done? For example, if you are wanting to lose the beer gut, or 30 pounds, ask yourself why??
  2. Choose a workout program that fits your fitness personality, then shop at the link below

FOOD: Fuel or Instrument of Death?

I am a subscriber to Success Magazine and also to the blog done by the editor, Darren Hardy. In my mailbox today, he had a blog post titled, The No. 2 Instrument of Death.

We are in a crisis that IS WITHIN OUR CONTROL and it fills me with pride that we have a solution to offer people so they can take charge and reverse this trend. I’ll share those details below. Here is a snippet from Darren’s post.

What do you think causes more deaths in the United States each year?

  • Car crashes
  • Drug overdoses
  • Alcoholism
  • Firearm accidents

All of those combined don’t total a third of this insidious instrument of death: food.

We are literally eating our way into the grave.

Obesity (caused by bad diet and lack of exercise) kills some 400,000 people in this country every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Only smoking-related diseases account for more deaths, with a total of 435,000 annually, the CDC reports.

A staggering 129.6 million Americans are overweight or obese—that’s two out of every three people in this country. Think about it. While our ancestors battled disease, famine and other deprivations, we are killing ourselves—with excess.

On top of that, we no longer have to chase down and kill our own food. Instead, we chase the world while sitting in front of a computer screen all day, every day, often neglecting to schedule in some form of physical activity.

It’s evident how true this is. The data from the Center for Disease Control is staggeringly unbelievable!

Now, I don’t want to get on a soapbox here, because I was one of those people who fell victim to the sedentary lifestyle and gorging on inadequate nutrition. Diabetes and obesity was obvious on the path I was heading. But I decided to take charge and just start taking control. It was not easy, but I did it and I now coach people for free to achieve the same. Putting themselves first and getting on a fitness plan and more importantly, getting the proper foods into their system so food works as fuel instead of an instrument of death. In my opinion, it’s the food and eating part that is the toughest when it comes to exercise and eating right.

Insanity Asylum Review, so far

I have a whole new respect for athletes on professional sports teams. Just when I thought it was OK to complain that they are overpaid, I get a dose of their training regimen. Enter, the asylum. Insanity Asylum.
Many of us have been anticipating the release of Asylum for quite some time now. It’s a follow-up program of the original Insanity, which is the hardest workout program I have ever done.

Two weeks ago Asylum arrived at my door.  Shaun T signed my copy as I won it because of my success as a Team Beachbody Coach. Three of us have decided to do the workouts so we needed to get a few extra pieces of equipment (2 more agility ladders and an extra speed jump rope) and make use of our clubhouse for space.

I’ve posted videos of my first week below. Here’s my Insanity Asylum review so far!

Asylum is a sports performance based workout and helps you improve your over all athletic performance as opposed to the endurance performance in Insanity.
I started with Speed and Agility and instantly discovered that there’s a lot of work to be done! Very creative moves intermixed with the speed rope and agility ladder had me questioning my coordination constantly. Still, the challenge is there and it really is fun working to improve. You use the agility ladder like crazy and the in and out ab progressions along with moving pushups has one begging for mercy! The bear crawl is a beast! The warmup is a workout in itself! As a matter of fact, all of the warmups in Insanity Asylum are killer.

We love the Strength workout where you hold dumbbells and do plyometric moves. That workout really torches my legs and glutes. The Back to Core workout puts a spin on your typical core workout. All of the moves are focused on the back even though your whole body is engaged. I know my shoulders and arms felt it as well as my legs.

Vertical Plyo has been the toughest so far for me. The agility ladder is used here again and you add in stretchy bands on your arms and legs doing plyo pushups, x jumps, moving pushups, long jumps, one legged jump knee tucks and more. Just when you’re hoping to get a drink of water or grab a breath of air, Shaun has you doing the speed rope as a recovery.

All of these workouts are kicking our butts and we have to break often. Some workouts have even gotten tougher the second time around.

On the nutrition front, we are eating many of the recipes in the eating plan (we love avocados!), which is easy to follow! The other items working for us is Recovery Formula and Shakeology.

I love the fact that this is a 30 day program as our bodies are screaming right now. Inside the box is also a plan where you can do a hybrid of P90X and Asylum or Insanity and Asylum. How slick is that?

Shakeology superfoods featured on Oprah.com – Many health benefits!

Shakeology’s superfoods were recently featured on Oprah.com in an indepth article titled, “The Superfoods That Could Change the Way You Eat, Feel, and Live.” In this article, Oprah.com’s editor in chief travels to Peru to “experience a trove of life-giving superfoods that just might revolutionize your view of nutrition.” Darin Olien takes Susan through Peru and the superfoods located in that part of the world. Just a few of the amazing ingredients that go into Shakeology.

I have been benefiting from Shakeology since it was released in 2009. I have never looked back. It’s my go to breakfast and occasionally a snack! I love it! I’ve been so passionate about this product because I just feel amazing! I have also witnessed many others benefiting from weight loss, energy better digestion and more! Still, I have to admit that I am unfamiliar with all of it’s natural ingredients and the benefits of all of the superfoods it possesses. I mean, I know there are superfood supplements out there, but nothing like this. And nothing out there had such backing to scour the earth for the the most nutrient dense plants. The fact that this product tastes amazing is impressive too. I tell people, “I have dessert first!”

Over the years my wife and I have noticed weight loss (especially when I do a 3 day-cleanse) and more energy. The Dirty Dozen: Getting better at buying organic produce

Over the years, my food shopping habits have improved. Still they need to be better! My wife, Hillary, is so awesome at shopping for fresh produce and I tend to go in and buy frozen. When possible we buy organic, but I think that organic is more possible than we sometimes “look” for.

You see, even after you wash certain fruits and vegetables, they still contain much higher levels of pesticide residue than others. This includes apples, berries, grapes, spinach, and potatoes. When it comes to buying produce that were not organic, I have made a bath to soak fruits and veggie in the past, but am inconsistent. I must improve!! Buying organic can at least improve the quality of foods I put into my body.

What organic means:

  • Food hasn’t been genetically modified or irradiated.
  • Fertilizer does not contain sewage sludge or synthetic ingredients.
  • Produce hasn’t been contaminated with synthetic chemicals used as pesticides.
  • “100% Organic” means the product must contain 100 percent organic ingredients.
  • “Organic” means at least 95 percent of ingredients are organically produced.
  • “Made with Organic Ingredients” means at least 70 percent of ingredients are organic. 30 percent from a USDA approved list.

There are various lists out there, but here are the tops of the toxic lists.

Be sure to buy as organic or you’ll be eating chemicals that look like fruits and veggies! I’m working to commit to memory!

  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Bell peppers
  • Celery
  • Potatoes
  • Spinach

According to researchers at the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the “dirty dozen” produce should be bought as organic, when possible, because of the amount of pesticides. The cost may be more, but the health and flavor factors will be well worth the money.

One way I know I get my five fruits and vegetable servings every day is through Shakeology. At least I know I am getting high quality ingredients!
